An earthquake of magnitude 6.9 shook the Kermadec Islands in northern New Zealand on Saturday, without the authorities having issued a tsunami warning.

The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) reported that the earthquake had a depth of 150 kilometers and its epicenter was located about 900 kilometers from the northern region of Nortland.

For its part, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) indicated that the hypocenter of the earthquake was located 205 kilometers deep under the seabed in the Pacific Ocean.

New Zealand sits on the fault line between the Pacific and Oceanic tectonic plates and experiences some 14,000 earthquakes each year.
