6.3 magnitude earthquake shakes the Afghan city of Herat
A new earthquake of magnitude 6.3 shook the city of Herat early Sunday morning, in the same region of northwestern Afghanistan that has recorded two more earthquakes since the beginning of the monthreported the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The earthquake occurred at 03:36 am, 33 kilometers from Herat, in the western province of the same name where about a thousand people died due to strong tremors at the beginning of October.

On October 7, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake and eight powerful aftershocks shook the area, knocking down rows of rural houses and also injuring hundreds of people.
Days later, with thousands of terrified residents without shelter and volunteers searching for survivorsanother tremor of the same intensity killed one person and injured 130 others.
More than 90 percent of those killed in the earthquakes were women and children, Unicef reported Wednesday.
The United Nations said more than 12,000 people had been affected by the emergency.

Afghanistan is already suffering a serious humanitarian crisiswith the widespread withdrawal of foreign aid following the return of the Taliban to power in 2021.
