The President of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Mnangagwa, lamented the event and sent his condolences to the relatives of the deceased. He directed that it be declared a national disaster to manage assistance resources for those affected.

Local police reported that the accident occurred at midnight, when parishioners were traveling to perform religious services during the Easter weekend.
