A mother was killed when her 3-year-old son shot her with a gun found in the house, authorities said.
Cora Lyn Bush, 33, died at the hospital shortly after the incident Wednesday morning, the Spartanburg County coroner’s office said in a statement.
The boy’s grandmother was at the home in Spartanburg and her account to police officers was consistent with the evidence, the local sheriff’s office said in a statement.
Police are investigating how the boy got access to the gun and why it was unsafe.
In 2022, nearly 200 children have unintentionally fired a found gun, causing more than 80 deaths, according to data from Everytown for Gun Safety, a group that promotes gun safety.
