Angélica Lau, deputy director of Culture and Bicycle Use of Semovistated that the increase in users is due to the renewal of the program, the arrival of new bicycles and the expansion of cycle stations to neighborhoods in the Álvaro Obregón, Azcapotzalco and Coyoacán mayors.
When the expansion was carried out and the aim was to bring Ecobici to 63 new neighborhoods, there was a percentage increase of 53.2%, this has to do with this expansion of Ecobici,” he commented.
Prior to the expansion of the industrial estate, the service was provided in the mayors Benito Juárez, Cuauhtémoc and Miguel Hidalgo.
From 2019 to date, in the Mexico City more than 239 kilometers of bicycle infrastructure such as cycle paths, cycle lanes or bike-buses.
In that sense, Lau admitted that, with so much cycling infrastructurethe challenge is to maintain it, since a cycle path in poor condition becomes the worst obstacle for cyclists.
I am a cyclist and yes, many times it is one of the biggest obstacles. In that sense, through the Ministry of Works, a lot of emphasis has been placed on continuing to maintain the existing infrastructure, because it is not only about generating it, but also ensuring that it is in the appropriate conditions," said the official.
