Rio de Janeiro, Nov 4 (EFE).- The final of the 2023 Copa Libertadores between Fluminense and Boca Juniors, which is being played at the MaracanĂĄ in Rio de Janeiro, went to extra time, after 1-1 at the end of time regulatory.

Fluminense took the lead with GermĂĄn Cano (m.36) and Luis AdvĂncula tied (m.72) for Boca Juniors.

If the tie persists, the final will be decided in a penalty shootout.

Rio de Janeiro, Nov 4 (EFE).- Goalkeeper Sergio Romero, Boca Juniors' biggest star in the current Copa Libertadores campaign, will start this Saturday's final against Fluminense at the MaracanĂĄ stadium in Rio de Janeiro wearing the captain's armband of the xeneize team, in the absence of Marcos Rojo due to suspension.

Although Boca coach Jorge AlmirĂłn had implied that without Rojo on the field the captain would be midfielder Pol FernĂĄndez, the official lineup released by Conmebol shortly before the match confirmed that the armband will be worn by Romero.

The 36-year-old veteran goalkeeper is considered the main person responsible for Boca's arrival in the final thanks to his saves in penalty shootouts in three instances.

The team in the blue and gold shirt reached the final after a series of three elimination rounds that had to be resolved in the penalty shootout against Uruguayan Nacional in the round of 16, Racing in the quarterfinals and Palmeiras in the semifinals.

Rojo, captain of Boca, received a suspension date for his expulsion in the match with Palmeiras.

Buenos Aires, Nov 4 (EFE).- Peruvian Luis AdvĂncula became the first foreigner to score a goal for Boca Juniors in the twelve Copa Libertadores finals played by the Argentine team, including this year.

The winger, Xeneize's top scorer in the current edition of the Copa Libertadores, with four goals, converted the 1-1 score in the 72nd minute with which the match against Fluminense ended in regulation time.

The Peruvian international, former soccer player for Juan Áurich and Sporting Cristal of his country and Rayo Vallecano of Spain, among others, inscribes his name in the history of goalscorers of the Argentine team in the Copa Libertadores finals.

Eliminating penalty shootouts, Boca Juniors scored 27 goals in the 12 Copa Libertadores finals played - including today's -, of which 25 were scored by Argentine footballers and one more, an own goal, by the Brazilian Patricio.

The latter was recorded in the 2007 final, the last title for Boca Juniors, won against Gremio.

The twenty-seventh goal, that of AdvĂncula, becomes the first by a foreigner in the xeneizes ranks.
